Sania Rivers scored 22 points as North Carolina State defeated Vanderbilt 70-62 in the ACC/SEC Challenge on Wednesday night.

The Wolfpack (8-0) remain undefeated, while the Commodores (7-1) suffered their first loss of the season.

For NC State, Rivers shot 8-of-14 from the field and grabbed eight rebounds. River Baldwin had 12 points and nine rebounds, Aziaha James scored 14 points and Zoe Brooks had 10 points, four assists and four steals.

Jordyn Cambridge scored 15 points and Sacha Washington had 14 points and seven rebounds.

The Commodores kept the game close in the first half and led by one when Cambridge hit her third 3-pointer of the night with 7:42 left in the second quarter. But the Wolfpack then went on a mini 11-0 run to take a 10-point advantage with the help of a three-pointer from Rivers.

NC State outscored Vanderbilt 19-10 in the third quarter to further pull away from Vanderbilt. Brooks and James hit back-to-back three-pointers to start the fourth quarter to give the Wolfpack a 24-point lead. Vanderbilt closed the gap to eight points with a minute to play, but never got any closer.

The Big Picture.

NC State's defense continues to be their strength this season. Prior to the start of this game, opponents were shooting just 30.8 percent from the field against the Wolfpack. Against Vanderbilt, NC State limited the Commodores to a season-low 34.3 percent shooting.

Vanderbilt came into the game with a 7-0 record, their best start since 2011. However, under third-year head coach Shea Ralph, the Commodores have struggled against tough teams, going 1-11 against ranked opponents. Vanderbilt will have a chance to increase their win total before SEC play begins in December.
